Family owned–and–operated businesses passed down through generations. Delivering choice and value and providing good-paying jobs with quality benefits. Community leaders actively promoting responsibility. America’s beer distributors have a great story to tell.
In 2006, NBWA launched an education campaign to ensure the public, the media, opinion leaders and lawmakers all understand the importance of state-based regulation, the three-tier system and the value of beer distributors. NBWA told the beer distributor story by including core messages in every public communication and education initiative and by helping beer distributors promote the value they provide and the great things they do in their communities.
Family businesses delivering more than just beer As local employers, the 2,750 beer distributors nationwide employ more than 90,000 Americans and provide employees with rewarding, good-paying jobs with quality benefits including health care. They are independent businesses that contribute in many ways to the communities they serve by providing high quality jobs and tax revenue, sponsoring local events, contributing to local philanthropies and proactively encouraging the responsible consumption of alcohol beverages within a regulated system.
Providing choice and value By working with hundreds of brewers – large and small, import and domestic – distributors provide immense choice at a great value for consumers. They provide more than 13,000 beer brands – from multinational brands to the smallest microbrews – equal access to market and create a level playing field for the nation’s licensed retailers.
Providing perishable products to adult consumers safely and responsibly Because alcohol is not like other consumer goods and people feel differently about alcohol from one state to the next, beer distributors operate within a system that allows states to regulate alcohol in a way that best meets the needs of each state.

Distributors,
licensed at both the state and federal
levels, sell only to licensed retailers and work with
state regulators to provide a clear chain of custody
and accountability in the sale of malt beverage
products, making it easier to collect taxes and
to police establishments that attempt to violate
state laws. The sale of alcohol through this threetier
system – including brewers, distributors and
retailers – and the strength of state alcohol regulation
are the keys to a safe and viable system of
alcohol control and distribution.
Promoting Responsibility Beer distributors actively promote responsible consumption of malt beverage products, sponsoring initiatives in their communities to fight drunk driving and underage drinking. The combined efforts of the beer industry, law enforcement, parents and community leaders have made a resounding difference. Over the past two decades, government and academic research has shown a significant decline in traffic incidents involving alcohol and underage drinking. There is still more to be done, and beer distributors will continue to be leading advocates for responsibility.
