–The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA), representing the interests of 2,750 beer distributors nationwide, has been elected to a seat on the Board of Directors of the Responsible Hospitality Institute (RHI). RHI is a non-profit organization that assists businesses and communities in creating safe and vibrant places for people to socialize. NBWA’s Senior Manager of Industry Affairs David Christman will occupy the seat for a two-year term ending in 2009.
NBWA President Craig Purser is excited for the Association to play a greater role in supporting RHI’s programs. “Beer is traditionally a part of socializing, and by supporting RHI’s important work of bringing together all stakeholders, NBWA can ensure beer is enjoyed responsibly and in a manner reflective of local attitudes toward alcohol. NBWA’s participation will increase beer distributor involvement in communities working with RHI and ultimately help the organization achieve its mission.”
Jim Peters, RHI’s President, welcomes NBWA to the board, and notes the important role distributors can play as a liaison to the bars, restaurants and night clubs. “Being locally based, the distributor has weekly contact with all businesses in a city, and can convey important information about upcoming educational events, assist new businesses in understanding local rules and regulations, and influence responsibility in marketing and service.”
Research conducted by RHI over the past five years shows a growing nighttime economy in many cities driven by changing demographics. RHI provides practical tools to plan, manage and police active hospitality zones, focusing on six core elements: Music and Entertainment, Security and Safety, Community Policing, Multi-Use Sidewalks, Late Night Transportation and Quality of Life.
