Anheuser-Busch gives $1.6M for China earthquake relief

Anheuser-Busch announced Thursday that it is donating $500,000 to the Chinese Red Cross to be used in relief efforts following the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Sichuan province in Central China on Monday.

Expert calls for crackdown on EU bootleg booze

While China continues to pose a significant copyright threat to Europe's spirit makers, the industry must also address the problem on its own doorstep, according to the director general of the European Spirits organization (CEPS). Jamie Fortescue told BeverageDaily.com that, with the expansion of the EU to 27 member states, there were serious concerns over copyright violations within the bloc itself, as the EU parliament this week vowed to crack down on bootleggers.

IL: State sticks to underage drinking message at area businesses

Ted Penesis of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission is traveling throughout the state placing stickers on bottles of liquor and six packs of beer. He keeps boxes of these stickers in the trunk of his car. The big ones, which cling to windows, read “WARNING - Providing Alcohol to Minors is Illegal, Unhealthy & Unacceptable. ”
Molson Coors venture with Miller on track

The head of beer brewing giant Molson Coors says plans are still on track to finalize a joint venture with SABMiller by midyear. Chief Executive Officer Leo Kiely told shareholders at an annual meeting today that the plan to combine U.S. operations of both companies will produce a more competitive operation. SABMiller's Miller Brewing Co. is based in Milwaukee.
Odell Brewing underwrites research on organic hops

Beer brewing and drinking are major industries in Fort Collins, and CSU grad student Ali Hamm is doing her part to improve things for everyone involved in the industry. Hamm, who is researching how to best grow organic hops in Colorado, has won a $20,000 grant from a local brewery.
TN: Ajax Distributing earns wholesaler of year honor from Miller Brewing

Miller Brewing Co. has named a local distributor as its top wholesaler of the year. Ajax Distributing received the 2008 Miller High Life President’s Award, which is the highest distinction given to a distributor, according to a media release. Ajax, based in Clarksville, is the regional distributor of Miller products here. A.B. Baggett, the local sales manager, handles 12 Tennessee counties.
Xterprise Announces Solution for Beer Keg Tracking, Recovery

Solutions provider Xterprise Incorporated announced today that its Clarity-RTI Re-Usable Transport Items solution is now available for beer keg tracking and return applications. According to the Beer Institute it is estimated that U.S. brewers and beer importers lose more than 300,000 kegs annually, at a cost of approximately $50 million. The Clarity-RTI Solution is designed to help eliminate lost, stolen and misplaced beer kegs.
Anheuser-Busch ending rights to import Grolsch

Anheuser-Busch Inc., the U.S. division of the nation's largest brewer, said Wednesday it is terminating its U.S. importing rights to the Grolsch beer brands, after Royal Grolsch was acquired by SABMiller. Anheuser-Busch expects the deal to close by Aug. 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Ballast Point Brewing Co. was sailing along just fine, for years happily producing beer that was popular locally in San Diego. “All of a sudden, our phones started ringing off the hook,” brewery vice president Mike Mellow said. “We had distributors from all over calling and they said, ‘I hear you make really good beer. Do you want to sell out here?’ It was crazy.”

A law that was the first of its kind in the nation, is being scaled back in Tennessee. The universal carding law lasted less than a year. It required anyone, no matter how old they looked, to be carded when buying beer at the supermarket or convenience store.
UK: Tesco ban on alcohol sales to parents

Tesco is refusing to sell alcohol to parents shopping with their children under rules designed to tackle underage drinking.
The supermarket has told cashiers not to supply alcohol if they suspect an adult is buying the drink for an underage youth.

Beer Raises a Glass to Rising Sales

Signs of a turnaround show reason for optimism. The beer industry has reason to say "cheers" this year, as sales are on their way up again after several years of struggle. Beer consumption in the United States grew 1.4 percent in 2007, according to the Beer Institute in Washington, D.C. Domestic volumes improved a total of 1.5 percent for the year, with the domestic craft segment up 12 percent. Import volumes increased 1.4 percent.

Hops and barley shortages are driving up beer prices, but it still was a surprise when some Portland beers passed the $3,500-a-six-pack level during an online auction this past weekend. Portland brewer Alan Sprints donated five 12-ounce bottles of his 1994 Hair of the Dog Dave barley wine to the charity auction. They sold for prices ranging from $478 to $707, for a total of $2,816. Had there been six bottles, it could have made for a $3,500-plus six-pack.

Moerlein revives beer heritage

If Greg Hardman has his way, Cincinnati will again be the beer center of the nation. "If I have anything to do with it, yes," crowed Hardman, president and chief executive of the Christian Moerlein Co. and father to a small but growing family of beers. Hardman bought the 1853 Cincinnati beer label four years ago and has been steadily growing sales in the region. This summer he plans to begin the first phase of a national expansion by rolling out his handful of beer brands to Indianapolis, Columbus and Louisville.

Tax hike boosts Aussie booze thefts

Liquor store owners in Australia are reporting surge in thefts of so-called alcopops less than two weeks after the tax on the beverages was raised. The tax on the pre-mixed cocktails was boosted 70 percent in an attempt to curb binge drinking by youths. However, merchants told the Sydney Morning Herald that the effect of the tax has been a rise in shoplifting.
UK: Report censures alcohol retailing by supermarkets

London's mayor bans alcohol on trains, buses

London's new mayor Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that alcohol would be banned on the capital's transport system from next month. The ban on drinking from or carrying open alcohol containers was a key manifesto pledge of Johnson, the irreverent journalist-turned lawmaker who defeated incumbent Ken Livingstone in a closely fought election last week.

UK: Tesco cheap booze hypocrisy slammed

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) has slammed the hypocrisy of Tesco over its cheap booze offers. Over the bank holiday weekend, Tesco ran a TV commercial with the strapline – "Carlsberg don't do price promotions. But we do." The supermarket giant was flogging a crate of 20 Carlsberg Export bottles for just £7.49 – just 37p a bottle. Back in February, Tesco said they would support measures to curb irresponsible promotions.
